Katy T. Schmidt

Associate
Areas of Practice:

Katy Schmidt concentrates her practice on education and labor and employment law. She regularly advises school districts on a broad range of issues, including student discipline, FERPA compliance, Sunshine Law matters, board governance, and staff and student investigations. Katy also counsels school districts and other employers on employment-related matters, including employee discipline and termination decisions, compliance with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the drafting and revision of employee policies and handbooks.

Katy also represents school districts in state and federal court. Her litigation experience includes defending claims alleging violations of Section 1983, the Missouri Human Rights Act, and related employment and education law claims. In addition to her defense work, Katy has experience representing school districts as plaintiffs in actions challenging the constitutionality of laws that impact public education and school district operations. Katy’s experience as a law clerk in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri provides her with a strong foundation in legal research and concise, well-reasoned legal writing.

Katy graduated magna cum laude from Washington University School of Law. While at Washington University, she served as senior editor of the Washington University Law Review.

Prior to attending law school at Washington University, Katy spent five years at Southwest Airlines where she worked in Technology and Corporate Strategy. Katy relies on this experience to develop practical legal strategies that align with her clients’ operational and organizational goals.
